Modeling Thermal Fluctuations: Phase Mixing and Percolation

چکیده
We consider the nonequilibrium dynamics of a a real scalar field in a degenerate double-well potential. The system is prepared in the lowest free energy state in one of the wells and the dynamics is driven by the coupling of the field to a thermal bath. Using a simple analytical model, based on the subcritical bubbles method, we compute the fraction of the total volume which fluctuates to the opposite phase as a function of the parameters of the potential. Furthermore, we show how complete phase mixing, i.e. symmetry restoration, is related to percolation, which is dynamically driven by domain instability. Our method describes quantitatively recent results obtained by numerical simulations, and is applicable to systems in the Ising universality class. submitted to Physical Review Letters.

Inhomogeneous nucleation in quark hadron phase transition
The effect of subcritical hadron bubbles on a first-order quark-hadron phase transition is studied. These subcritical hadron bubbles created due to thermal fluctuations introduce a finite amount of phase mixing (quark phase mixed with hadron phase) even at and above the critical temperature. For sufficiently strong transitions, as is expected to be the case for the quark-hadron transition, we s...
متن کاملSubcritical fluctuations at the electroweak phase transition.
We study the importance of thermal fluctuations during the electroweak phase transition. We evaluate in detail the equilibrium number density of large amplitude subcritical fluctuations and discuss the importance of phase mixing to the dynamics of the phase transition. Our results show that, for realistic Higgs masses, the phase transition can be completed by the percolation of the true vacuum,...
متن کاملQuantum Phase Transitions on Percolating Lattices
When a quantum many-particle system exists on a randomly diluted lattice, its intrinsic thermal and quantum fluctuations coexist with geometric fluctuations due to percolation. In this paper, we explore how the interplay of these fluctuations influences the phase transition at the percolation threshold. While it is well known that thermal fluctuations generically destroy long-range order on the...

متن کاملInterplay between thermal percolation and jamming upon dimer adsorption on binary alloys.
By means of Monte Carlo simulations we study jamming and percolation processes upon the random sequential adsorption of dimers on binary alloys with different degrees of structural order. The substrates are equimolar mixtures that we simulate using an Ising model with conserved order parameter. After an annealing at temperature T we quench the alloys to freeze the state of order of the surface ...
